Sweden has always a very important and big market in Europe for online casinos. Famous casinos like Mr. Green, LeoVegas and Casumo have their roots in Sweden and of course the biggest game providers Netent is the proud of the Swedish gaming community. Sweden has a gambling law since 1934 but that was without any internet regulations. So the market was bombarded between 2026 and 2026 by online casinos with license from Curacao or Malta but of course without any control and tax income for the Swedish Government. These big online casinos had offices in Malta because they couldn't operate in Sweden which meant a huge loss of job opportunities. Also Svenska Spel, the online gaming site owned by the government lost every year more market share so the Swedish government had to do something to get control of the market.
The Swedish Gambling Authority (or Spelinspektionen)is responsible for the Swedish Gambling market and is controlled by the Ministry of Finance. They are based in Strangnas and host 50 employees in their office. They take care of a safe, legal and reliable market and issue permits to gambling sites. They are also responsible for compliance and supervision of gaming operations and they provide training and information on gambling.
On 1st of January 2026 the Swedish Gambling Authority provided 16 casino sites with a new license. Until that date there was no license system for online casinos in Sweden. The licenses are valid for a period of 5 years but there are a few casinos who only got a period of 2 years because the authority wants to follow these companies extra carefully because of past offenses in other markets.
With the new license system the Swedish Gambling Authority wants to create a safer market and protecting the Swedish inhabitants.
