If you have ever played a slot machine, you know that it can feature standard and special symbols. Scatters are special symbols that are typically in charge of triggering a free spins feature. In some slot games, Scatters only pay prizes.

As their name suggests, they pay regardless of their position, so you can land them anywhere in view to win a prize or activate free games. However, you will be required to land 3 or more Scatters on the reels at the same time to trigger the feature or get paid. While playing free games, in some games Scatters will appear to award additional freebies while at others they may not be available within the feature.

Typically, Scatters are the only symbols that cannot be replaced by Wilds. Yet, in some slot games, it is possible to land Wild along with Scatters to activate the bonus game. When this is the case, you may be required to land Scatters on a payline starting from the far left position, just like any other symbol. This is exception to the rule, though. When it comes to Scatter prizes, they are typically given as multipliers. That means that they the amount given in the paytable is multiplied by the total bet instead of being displayed in coins like other icons.

Sometimes, Scatters can trigger other bonus rounds or can be labeled “Bonus”. In order to understand how Scatter works, it is recommended to refer to the paytable of a particular game before you start playing it. That’s where you will find all payouts, bonus game instructions and other rules the game plays according to.
