Gambling is meant to be fun, however, if a person becomes addicted then it can cause various issues. One such issue is that they start to lose control of their finances, which as a consequence could result in them ending up in debt. This is known as “Gambling Addiction”. It doesn’t happen overnight, however if an individual continues to lose money on a regular basis then it will most certainly lead to a gambling addiction.

It’s important that we raise awareness about this part of gambling, and one of the ways to do this is to warn our visitors about the dangers of gambling when they start playing in a casino. This article contains information on how to recognize the signs of gambling addiction, together with useful links and information on where to seek help.

How will I recognize the signs of gambling addiction?

Gamblers who experience problems will more often than not, refrain from seeking help and support, either on a professional level, or from friends and family.
Friends and family are often kept in the dark, and don’t realize the seriousness of the situation unless they recognize the signs of gambling addiction themselves.

Below is a list of the most common signs that an individual may display if they have gambling issues:

  • Returning to the casino with the intention of winning back any money that they have lost
  • Lying about winning money, when in actual fact they have lost money.
  • Playing in the casino for long periods of time while secretly wishing they were elsewhere
  • Guilty feelings in relation to gambling
  • The desire to stop gambling, however is unable to do so off their own will
  • Hide gambling habits from those around
  • Borrow money and not be able to pay it back
  • Take time off school or work illegitimately

If you recognize 3 of the above signs in either yourself, a friend or a family member; then it’s time for you or them to start seeking the relevant help and support required to address the issues.

Questions for yourself

If you feel that you are experiencing gambling problems; ask yourself the following questions, answering them as honestly as possible:

  • Do you think a lot about gambling?
  • Do you hide your gambling activities from other people?
  • Do you neglect your social contacts?
  • Do you become irritated, aggressive or start to panic if you go for long periods without gambling?
  • Do you have difficulties passing by a casino without resisting the urge to go inside?
  • Do you gamble for hours at a time?
  • Do you keep going back t the casino with the intent of trying to win back any monies that you have lost?

Gambling because your life is boring

According to research there is a connection between gambling and boredom. An individual who feels that their life is boring; may also experience feelings of loneliness. They may have very few or no friends, and over time develop an inferiority complex.

For these individuals; gambling is an ideal solution - an escape from the reality of the day- to-day stress and problems that life throws out in general. As a result, the individual has less time for work or hobbies, and pays very little attention to friends or family.

In order to change the situation; it’s important to try to develop hobbies and interests which will take up time in your daily life to prevent any feelings of boredom.

Gambling and its effects on your relationship

"My wife opened my eyes. She told me that I was quiet and that I had started to become boring. Looking back, she was right! I was devoting the majority of my time to gambling, rather than spending it with my family and friends. They are very important to me, however I couldn’t see a way out.”

An addiction to gambling not only affects you, however it also has an effect on those closest to you; your friends and family. The urge is to spend more and more time in the casino than at home and as a consequence your relationship with friends becomes distant and you will start having regular arguments with your partner over money problems.

Once you take the initial steps to seek the help and support you need; your relationship with both your close friends and family will start to improve.

Gambling and work

"I phoned work to say I was sick on several occasions so that I could go to the casino. I know that it’s wrong, however I found it difficult to resist the urge not to. If my boss finds out I will lose my job which would be devastating as I need my job because of my financial situation".

Gambling problems can have huge impacts on your obligations; your job being one of them. You may find it hard to achieve your accomplishments and you might face difficulties with being able to concentrate at work or at school.

You may find yourself going round in circles; wondering throughout the day when you’ll be able to get to the casino again, and how you can solve your money issues associated with visiting the casino. However, if you are not dedicated to your job then there is the risk of losing it, resulting in a loss of income which in turn means no money to spend in the casino!

Try to put these thoughts aside and concentrate on your job. If you find yourself in a job that you dislike, then try to find a new one which you can put all your efforts into to make it successful.
